Made using Nabeshima celadon glaze, the only natural celadon that currently exists in Japan. Celadon has a long history and is said to have been produced in China around 3,500 years ago. The techniques for celadon glaze began to be established during the Han Period around the first century A.D. and continues to be used to this day. Loved over such long periods, natural Nabeshima celadon has particularly beautiful emerald green hues that are almost transparent. A characteristic is the soft texture generated by the thick glaze.

It was once produced only for feudal lords

In 1675, 31 of the best potters from the Arita and Imari areas of Hizen Province were gathered to produce gifts for the shogun. (Today, these areas are located in Saga Pref.) The potters established a clan pottery, marking the beginning of Nabeshima porcelain. The finely crafted works of the pottery were exclusively for shoguns and feudal lords.

Ordinary people would never have the opportunity to use such items. For feudal lords, Nabeshima porcelain was a daily necessity.
